Appointed Councilors

The Committee will be made up of at least eleven members which will consist of the following office bearers:

  • President
  • Vice President
  • Treasurer
  • Chairpersons of each branch
  • 1 Dentist attached to a university having a dental faculty;
  • 1 Dental technician/technologist attached to a training institution
  • 3 Members of the public who are not registered in terms of any health related Act
  • At least one shall be appointed on account of his or her knowledge of the law;

Branch Committees

Each Branch Committee shall consist of a minimum of five office bearers:

  • Chairperson
  • Vice Chairperson
  • Secretary
  • Treasurer
  • A member
  • 2 dental   technician  contractors  nominated and elected by dental technician contractors break
  • 2 dental technicians/technologists employees and who are nominated and elected by employees

Nominated Councilor

  • 1 Dentist nominated and elected by dentists


  • To promote the interests and needs of members.
  • To encourage the settlement of disputes by conciliatory methods.
  • To promote, support or oppose as it may be deemed expedient any   proposed legislation.
  • To use every legitimate means to persuade all persons who are   eligible for membership to become members.
  • To provide, when deemed necessary legal assistance to members.
  • To co-operate with other organisations in dealing with matters   affecting members.
  • To affiliate with other organisations where such affiliation is deemed   to be in the interests of the members.
  • To do such other lawful things as may appear to be in the interests   of the members.
  • To establish and administer funds for the benefit of its members   and their dependants.
  • To assist in the promotion of dentistry in the Republic;
  • To control all matters relating to the education and training of dental   technicians or dental technologists and;
  • The exercising of the practices in the supplying, making, altering or   repairing of artificial dentures or other dental appliances or;
  • Any other work pertaining to such dentures or appliances;
  • To promote liaison of the education and training, and the manner of the   exercise of the practices both in the Republic and elsewhere;
  • And to promote the standards of such education and training and the   manner of the exercise of such practices in the Republic;
  • To promote good relations between dentists, clinical dental technologists, dental technicians and dental technologists and other   supplementary  dental health services personnel;
  • To advise the Minister on any matter falling within the scope of this Act;   and
  • To communicate to the Minister information on matters of public   importance acquired by the council in the course of the performance of   its functions under this Act.
